Six friends each carried a section of the model to the historic Augarten, Vienna in May. Once we arrive at the designated site it was assembled. Weighing a mere 4kg it was commandeered by children in the park and transformed it into an interactive public sculpture/performance.

This sculpture parodies “Six degrees of Separation” which suggests, we are all as all things connected by 6 steps or contacts in life. At one turn Sputnik (the sculpture) lampoons the design of the early tank stoppers otherwise known as the “Czech hedgehog” heavily used in WW2, they were also employed as zone demarcation devises and are being re issued to fortify today’s European borders.

The public presentation in the Augarten was a prelude to the 2018 Vienna Contemporary Fair. The sculpture is a VAL, Vehicles for Another Landscape. It is a hexagonal structure to be fabricated in ¼ in. plywood. Each of the six quads measure 100 x 70cm and are connected in the center by an interior open faced cube made from heavier birch plywood. Assembled the sculpture will extend 270cm by 70cm in 6 directions. I will be inside, As I traverse to the highest point of a selected quad my weight will force it to tilt downward. As that quad makes contact with the ground surface, I will shift my body to another higher quad and repeat this process, navigating the space of the booth of the fair.
